Having a baby is an exciting and a life-changing event.  For some people, however, getting pregnant is not something that can just be taken for granted.

Infertility can affect either men or women. Male infertility is a contributing factor in about 40% of the cases. There are some lifestyle changes, however, that can have a dramatic and direct impact on the fertility process. The following tips can help a couple increase their chances of getting that exciting blue line on the pregnancy test.

Women can use ovulation prediction kits to help them know when they will ovulate. These tests let the woman know a day or two prior to ovulation so that they can time their attempts to conceive and maximize their chances of pregnancy. The day that the test shows a positive sign, the couple should have intercourse that day as well as the next one.  Charting the body’s basal temperature can also help a woman attain a pregnancy. This chart will provide her with the record of her body cycles and show issues such as a low level of progesterone or luteal phase defects. There are places online that a woman can download a basal body temperature chart in Fahrenheit or Celsius format.

Taking prenatal vitamins is not a prerequisite to getting pregnant, but doing so prior to a pregnancy drastically reduced the baby’s chance of having neural tube defects, and can make the difference in whether a pregnancy remains viable if the defects are big enough to keep the baby healthy and growing.  A daily dose of Vitamin C is also important to keeping the placenta strong enough to support a full term pregnancy.

Men can also take steps to help ensure that they are doing everything they can to get that egg fertilized. Keeping cool, particularly avoiding excess heat around the scrotal sac can help keep the sperm lively and healthy. This can be done by wearing loose fitting briefs or boxers, and staying out of the sauna, hot tub, or a steaming shower.  Eliminating caffeine from the diet is another step to maintaining healthy sperm. It may be difficult to give up coffee entirely for some men, but drastically limiting it can help their chance of staying fertile.  Vitamins are recommended for men, as well as for women who are working toward a pregnancy. Folic acid, Vitamin C, E, and B12, and Selenium, and Zinc, are a few of the vitamins suggested for men.  Men may also want to avoid certain medications that may affect fertility, such as anabolic steroids, and certain anti-fungal, anti-diarrheal, and antibiotic medicines.

Abstaining from sex for a short time, not to exceed 6 days, is also a way to encourage the sperm to be potent, and to increase the volume of the sperm.  However, when a woman is in her fertile period, intercourse every other day is often the best way to conceive. A woman’s egg will be viable for only 24 hours at the most. Sperm can live two or three days. Therefore, the fertile period is around five days in length before the ovulation, and only a day after it.

Regular exercise and abstaining from drugs, tobacco, and alcohol are also conducive to conception.
